A New Generation and Digital Transformation.

In the 2010s, Matthews Architects experienced a generational shift, as a new wave of architects joined the practice—bringing with them fresh perspectives, bold ideas, and a strong passion for innovation. This infusion of new talent revitalised the studio culture, creating a dynamic environment where creativity, curiosity, and collaboration thrived.

These emerging architects embraced contemporary design thinking and were eager to explore sustainable approaches, digital fabrication, and user-focused solutions. Their energy complemented the firm’s established expertise, resulting in a productive exchange between experience and innovation. This period marked a time of renewal and growth, as the practice continued to evolve while staying grounded in its core values of thoughtful design and lasting impact.

In 2010, Gerald Matthews was appointed Director of Matthews Architects, joining his father Barry in leading the firm into a new era. This milestone marked the formal transition to a shared leadership model—blending Barry’s decades of experience and foundational vision with Gerald’s fresh perspective and contemporary approach to practice.

Together, they steered the firm through a period of growth and transformation. Gerald’s appointment signaled a renewed focus on design excellence, strategic thinking, and the integration of emerging technologies, while continuing the firm’s longstanding commitment to community, quality, and integrity in architecture.
