 A New Era.

Gerald Matthews joined the practice in 2001 as a fresh graduate, stepping into the architecture firm founded by his father, Barry Matthews. With a passion for design and a clear vision for the future, Gerald quickly immersed himself in all facets of the practice. Learning from the ground up, he embraced both the legacy of the business and the evolving nature of architecture. Over the years, Gerald has played a key role in shaping the firm’s direction, blending tradition with innovation and helping to expand its reputation for thoughtful, community-focused design.

In 2003, Veselin Stefanov joined Matthews Architects, bringing with him a wealth of technical expertise from his native Bulgaria. Since then, he has become an integral part of the team, known for his precision, problem-solving skills, and commitment to quality. Veselin’s deep knowledge and consistent dedication have made him a cornerstone of the practice, contributing to countless successful projects and helping to uphold the firm’s high standards to this day.

The the early 2000’s brought new opportunities and challenges, prompting Matthews Architects to adapt to evolving market demands and streamline its operations for greater efficiency. As joint venture projects in China started to wrap up, the firm shifted its focus back to the Australian landscape, where local projects began to take on new significance.

With the arrival of the new century came a wave of digital transformation. Matthews Architects embraced emerging technologies, transitioning from traditional drafting methods to advanced digital tools that reshaped the way designs were conceptualised, developed, and documented. This period marked a pivotal shift in the practice’s evolution—balancing a respect for craftsmanship with the possibilities of a fast-changing digital world.
