Design & Technology Centre

Matthews Architects transformed a former residential building into a state-of-the-art Design and Technology teaching facility. While not heritage listed, the design respects the building’s historic fabric and contrasts it with a contemporary industrial aesthetic. Ornate heritage ceilings are highlighted with up-lights set against galvanised cable trays, and original floorboards have been carefully reinstated. New openings are framed by exposed steel portals, and reused tiles form bespoke floor infills. Modern technology integrates seamlessly, with a low ceiling of metal peg boards referencing traditional metalwork while providing a practical surface above soldering benches.
