For this project Matthews Architects received the 2011 prize for Commercial Architecture from the South Australian chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects.
The design is radical in its honesty and simplicity. Central to the design was the ambition of taking what used to be the back of house and making it the front of house. By placing the service department in plain sight, at the front of the site, the design instantly embodied CMI’s pride in its work and its desire to be open and transparent with its customers. The design allowed all aspects of the business to be drawn together into a seamless whole such that servicing, sales, administration, spare parts, customer care and fleet services could all work in unison and collectively improve the outcomes for customers.
The minimalist form remains playful in its use of scale and takes full advantage of it’s location to show off its vehicle collection with pride.
